How we go about calculating the calendar days

  • Determine nearest leap years  = 2004, and 2008
  • In leap year and year after equinoxes are 22nd  march and Sept, and Solstice 21st June and Dec
  • In two years before the leap year, they are equinoxes are 23rd March and Sept, and Solstice 22nd June and Dec

There are many way to set the 4 other sabbats,  and some of these are detailed below

Method 1 stick to a set group of dates each year, different paths differ slightly on some of the dates they use.

The most common are those shown in the tables above.

Method 2 base them on specifics appearing such as a certain tree flowering

Method 3 As we now know the mid seasons we can work out where the seasons start and stop as being equal distance between them

This places them at 5th Feb, 7th May, 7th of August and the 7th of November for the two years above, the gap between equinoxes and solstices ranges from 90 to 93 days.

Method 4 start with method 3 and then adjust to nearest moon position to compliment

Method 5 base them on the common dates in method one and adjust according to the moon

Method 6 select the dates by the suns rise being mid way between the two either side.

The oldest known records:-

In the the Coligny Celtic Calendar that was found as a bronze plate in Brittany that dated from about the first century CE.  The cycle of the year is linked to the quarter of the Moon and the time of the day. Imbolge is celebrated at midnight at the new Moon nearest the beginning of February, Beltane at dawn on the First Quarter Moon nearest the beginning of May, Lammas  at mid day on the Full Moon closest to the first of August, and Samhain was celebrated at sunset on the Last Quarter Moon closest to the first of November.

By this Celtic method we have:-

  2006 2007
Imbulge 29th Jan 19th Jan
Beltane 5th May 24th April
Lammas 9th Aug 30th July
Samhain 12th Nov 1st Nov

These are highlighted on the calendars above.

A guide on the history of calendars and more, is in preparation.
